Population-specific baselines
Baseline Testing for E-Sports Athletes
The new frontier — cognitive baselines as performance and health monitoring tools.
E-sports represents an emerging frontier for cognitive baseline testing — not for traditional concussion risk, but for cognitive performance monitoring and brain health. Some professional gaming organizations use neurocognitive assessments to track reaction time, processing speed, attention, and working memory over time — identifying cognitive fatigue patterns, burnout risk, and the effects of sustained screen exposure.
While this isn’t a traditional concussion use case, it demonstrates the broader value of cognitive baselines as performance and health monitoring tools. See also the future of baseline testing.
When to re-baseline
Plan every two years when clinical staff agree for athletes under 18, and every two to three years for stable adult athletes for adults in esports. Always capture a new baseline after medical clearance from a concussion, after invalid or low-effort test results, when ADHD or other cognition-affecting medications change, or after 12+ months away from the sport.
