Multiple Sports, One Baseline: Do Multi-Sport Athletes Need Seasonal Re-Testing?

An annual baseline is usually enough — but there are specific situations where re-baselining makes sense.

3 min read

For most multi-sport athletes, a single annual baseline is sufficient — cognitive function, balance, and vestibular-ocular performance don’t change dramatically between sports seasons. However, if significant time has passed (more than one year), if there’s been an intervening concussion, or if the athlete has moved from a non-contact season to a contact season, re-baselining is appropriate.

The key is ensuring the baseline is current and reflects the athlete’s present cognitive status. See also the age-based renewal schedule.
